EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

What happens in EMDR

EMDR focuses on the brain's ability to constantly learn by taking past experiences and updating the information, past emotionally charged experiences lose their emotional impact through the use of bilateral stimulation.

What to expect with EMDR:

Is it necessary to tell my therapist all the details about my problems in order for them to be processed? No, it's not necessary to talk about all of the details of your experience. You can share as little or as much as you want.

Will I get emotional?

Yes you may experiences strong emotions during your EMDR session, however you will be prepared for how to handle these emotions prior to your first EMDR session so that you can safely manage them.

Is EMDR like hypnosis?

No, during the EMDR process you will be conscious, present and in full control.

How long is EMDR treatment?

Like all treatments the length of time it takes to reach your treatment goals will depends on the complexity if the problem. Expect it to one to several treatment sessions.

What does an EMDR session look like?

You will be asked a set of questions to access and activate the negative experience and the adaptive resolution that you seek. A set of rapid eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) will be applied while you are encouraged to practice free association in order to allow the brain to work through the experience. You will be asked to give brief reports of what you are experiencing between sessions of rapid eye movements. EMDR processing will continue until the past experience has been updated to the adaptive present perspective (this may take multiple sessions depending on the complexity of the issue being addressed).text here...
